Brazil wins the 40’s Women’s Global Cup

On June 28 to July 1,2017, the city of Aquas de Sao Pedro, Brazil  hosted the second Global Cup to be held in Brazil and the first 40’s women Global Cup – World Senior Volleyball Championships.
Four teams representing Brazil, Canada, Paraquay and Peru were welcomed to Aguas de Sao Pedro on June 27 and had a chance to socialize with a welcome reception and meal before the competition began on Wednesday June 28th with the opening ceremonies and the singing of the national anthems followed by the round robin matches. The host country Brazil was the tournament favourite coached by Luigi Buccino Junior from the Fluminense club in Rio de Janeiro and they quickly distinguished themselves losing only one match in the round robin. On the other hand the Canadian team struggled winning one match and losing two in the round robin which took place over the first two days.

The third day was the beginning of a double elimination round and in the winner bracket finals, it was Brazil easily beating Canada in straight sets. All was forgotten as the players and coaches attended the Global Cup banquet at a beautiful location on the outskirts of Aquas de Sao Pedro where they were all entertained with dancing and singing.

The fourth and last day saw Canada and Brazil meeting in the best of five gold medal final and it was the best match of the event. Brazil continued their dominance winning the first set 25-19, however Canada shocked the Brazilians and the crowd by winning the second set in a thrilling nail-biter 31-29. That set Brazil on their heels and they lost the third set 25-18. Then Brazil came back with a vengeance winning the fourth set 25-11. In the fifth and deciding set the Brazilians rolled to a 5-1 start but the Canadians showed tremendous heart and would not give up eventually closing the gap to 7-8  but Brazil showed their mettle and ending up winning the set 15-12 and the 40’s World championships.
